During the Middle Ages, Transylvania, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, was settled by various Western European populations, collectively known today as the ‘Saxons.’ These settlers fortified their churches and towns, with seven of them becoming so renowned for their defenses that the German name for Transylvania, Siebenbürgen (‘the seven fortified towns’), was derived from them. Among these, Sibiu stood out as the most well-defended Saxon town.
As fortifications rapidly spread across Saxon-inhabited lands in response to Mongol and Turkish threats, similar defensive structures emerged throughout the region. The castle in Hunedoara underwent significant transformations, becoming the largest fortified castle in Transylvania.

this tour involves moderate walking. The terrain varies, from paved surfaces to uneven ground, cobblestones and city hills. Inside the castle you will also have to climb tall sets of stairs, sometimes without a handrail, with no elevator available. Periods of standing during walks are also common.

A Journey Through Medieval Strongholds
Set off on an unforgettable journey to Southern Transylvania, departing from Cluj at 8:30 a.m. This Corvin Castle & Sibiu City tour offers a deep dive into the region’s rich history.
Our first stop is Sibiu, a city rich in history and culture. Initially, it was the most well-fortified medieval town in Transylvania and the former capital of the Transylvanian Saxons. Sibiu seamlessly blends its historic charm with a vibrant contemporary atmosphere. Indeed, recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2007, the city boasts remarkable medieval defences, picturesque squares and architectural gems. During our visit we’ll explore its most iconic landmarks, including the legendary Liars’ Bridge, the charming Small Square, the Large Square and the Evangelical Cathedral, a testament to the city’s Saxon heritage.
Afterwards, enjoying a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, we will then journey to Hunedoara, home to one of Transylvania’s most awe-inspiring landmarks – Corvin Castle (Hunyad Castle). This towering Gothic fortress, once the seat of the influential Hunyadi family, stands as a masterpiece of medieval architecture, surrounded by myths and legends. As we wander through its grand halls and imposing towers, we’ll uncover tales of John Hunyadi, the valiant Champion of Christ, and Matthias Corvinus, the wise and just king of Hungary. These were two of the family’s most legendary figures. This Corvin Castle & Sibiu City experience promises a blend of historical depth and architectural grandeur.
Finally, in the late afternoon, we’ll begin our return to Cluj, thereby bringing this captivating exploration of Transylvania’s medieval history to a close.
