Physical activity level
This tour involves moderate walking each day (2–4 h). The terrain varies from paved surfaces to uneven ground, cobblestones and city hills. Expect breaks in the car and between attractions. Be prepared to climb flights of stairs, sometimes without handrails (in medieval buildings, salt mine or small hotels). Periods of standing during city walks or sightseeing stops are common. Travel days may have fluctuating paces with both longer and shorter durations. On certain days there will be changes in altitude or temperatures.

Day 1: Meet & greet in Budapest: journey to Transylvania

Soon after, set off for Romania and begin your journey into the heart of Eastern Europe. Following a 3-hour drive, cross the border into Transylvania and make your first stop in Oradea. Here, savour a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and take a relaxed stroll through the old city centre, where vibrant Art Nouveau architecture sets the tone for your introduction to Transylvania’s rich cultural tapestry.

Continue to Cluj-Napoca, a dynamic city renowned for its universities, cosmopolitan vibe, and rich cultural heritage. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay at a 3-star hotel, resting in the heart of this vibrant city.

Day 2: From Turda to Sighisoara: a day of history and adventure

After a hearty breakfast, head to the town of Turda to explore its famous salt mine. As you descend underground, uncover centuries of mining history and enjoy a peaceful boat ride across the mine’s hidden subterranean lake.

Next, journey into Saxon Transylvania with a stop at Biertan. Here, visit the 15th-century fortified church, a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by the picturesque Transylvanian countryside. As part of your visit, delve into the intriguing customs of the Saxon community during the Middle Ages. After a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Sighisoara, home to one of Europe’s last inhabited medieval fortresses. Take time to discover its enchanting architecture and learn about its connection to Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula.

Conclude the day with dinner at a local restaurant and an overnight stay at a cozy 3-star hotel in Sighisoara.

Day 3: From Viscri to Brasov: Saxon heritage, Dracula’s castle and resilience

Following breakfast, journey to the village of Viscri, a beautifully preserved Saxon village. Step back in time as you visit its 13th-century UNESCO-listed fortified church and enjoy an authentic farm-to-table lunch in a local guesthouse, savouring regional flavours. During your visit, discover the inspiring story of a local woman’s relentless efforts to revive and unite this once-deserted, post-communist community. Note: The Transfagarasan Road is open only from June to September. If closed, enjoy extra free time in Brasov or Sibiu.

This Gothic masterpiece, once home to the Hunyadi family, offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval architecture and history, including the story of Elizabeth Szilagyi, a Hungarian noblewoman, wife of John Hunyadi and mother of King Matthias the Just.

In the afternoon, travel westward to Timisoara, arriving in the late afternoon. Celebrated as the European Capital of Culture in 2023, Timisoara is known for its pivotal role in the 1989 revolution.
