Day 1: Sacred sites & historical reflections

Meet your guide at 8:30 a.m. and embark on a scenic drive through the picturesque Carpathian Mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views as you journey towards Maramures.

Our first significant stop of the day will be the Surdesti wooden church, a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built at the beginning of the 18th century, this impressive structure stands tall as one of the tallest wooden churches in Maramureș.

We then journey across the dramatic mountain scenery, arriving in the small border town of Sighetu Marmatiei. Here, we’ll visit the poignant Memorial House of Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Holocaust survivor and author of Night. Born in this town in 1928, Wiesel’s powerful testimony continues to inspire global conversations about the importance of standing against hatred and discrimination.

Following this meaningful visit, enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant, taking in the local atmosphere.

Afterward, we will visit the Memorial of the Victims of Communism, housed within a former prison. This sobering experience offers a glimpse into the dark history of communist rule in Romania, where political prisoners, intellectuals, clergy and others perceived as threats to the regime were unjustly detained.

Later in the day, a short transfer takes us to Sapanta village. Here, we’ll visit the captivating Merry Cemetery – a truly unique and colorful resting place. Notably, hand-painted wooden crosses depict scenes from the deceased’s lives, often with a touch of irony and humor.

Conclude your day with dinner and a comfortable overnight stay at a charming rural guesthouse.

Day 2: Rural charm & artistic treasures
