Massive population migrations profoundly shaped the Middle Ages in Transylvania. Specifically, the region’s position within the Kingdom of Hungary demanded strong defences against frequent invasions from the Mongols and the Ottomans. Consequently, this geopolitical pressure led to the settlement of people from Western Europe, collectively known as the Saxons. Beyond their crucial defensive roles, the Saxons were instrumental in developing the local trade, agriculture and urban landscape of Transylvania.

This necessity of building strong fortifications directly resulted in the appearance of fortified towns. In fact, seven of these settlements became so formidable and renowned that they gave rise to the German name for Transylvania: Siebenbürgen (‘the seven fortified towns’). Among these, Sighisoara stands today as one of the best-preserved and most picturesque medieval citadels in Europe.

Meanwhile, as the region became part of larger empires, the history of salt mining in Transylvania began to take shape, particularly at Turda. Although early documents mention salt extraction here from the 13th century, the mine accessible today was significantly developed starting in the 17th century under the Habsburg Monarchy.

Medieval History Meets Subterranean Adventure

The day’s tour begins with a journey to the Turda Salt Mine (Salina Turda)*. First, you will descend 100 meters underground for a unique adventure. You will explore Franz Joseph Gallery, plus Rudolf & Terezia Mines. Furthermore, you will learn about the millennia-old history of salt mining in Transylvania, from its earliest documentation to modern uses. Finally, enjoy free time to admire the spectacular salt formations and take an optional boat ride on the vast underground salt lake.

Next, following the subterranean experience, we head to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Sighisoara Fortress. After a relaxed lunch, we will explore this remarkably preserved medieval citadel. We will walk along the remaining original defense towers and navigate the colourful, picturesque streets. Additionally, we will climb the historic Covered Staircase to reach the Church on the Hill. Moreover, you will uncover fascinating local legends, including the captivating tales connected to Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the Dracula myth. You will have the option to ascend the iconic Clock Tower (not available on Mondays) for a panoramic view of the citadel.

Ultimately, in the evening, we return to Cluj. This concludes an unforgettable journey that perfectly balanced Transylvania’s monumental medieval past with its incredible underground legacy.
