Massive population migrations characterized the Middle Ages in Transylvania. Notably, among the many motives for these movements, Transylvania’s position as part of the Kingdom of Hungary required stronger defences against the Mongols and Ottomans, who frequently invaded the territory from the East and South. Consequently, people now refer to the populations migrating to Transylvania from Western Europe under the generic term ‘Saxons’. Beyond their defensive roles, the Saxons also played a significant part in developing trade and agriculture in their new land.
This very necessity of building strong fortifications resulted in the appearance of fortified towns. Indeed, seven of these towns became so formidable and renowned that they gave rise to the German name of Transylvania: Siebenburgen (‘the seven fortified towns’). Among these, Sighisoara stood as one of the seven.
Ultimately, this guided day tour from Cluj aims to reveal the monumental, yet colourful, romantic and delicious sides of the Saxon heritage. This unique exploration encompasses the rich history of Sighisoara & wine tasting experiences available in the area.

Tour Plan
A medieval tale of Transylvania & a glass of wine
Embark on a captivating guided tour to Sighisoara & wine tasting in Southern Transylvania, departing from Cluj at 8:30 a.m..
Our first stop is remarkably preserved medieval fortress of Sighisoara, one of the few still inhabited in Europe. We’ll explore the fortress, encircled by nine of its original fourteen defence towers. Within its walls, we’ll discover not only stunning medieval architecture but also captivating legends, such as the one connected to Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for the Dracula myth.
During our exploration, we’ll climb the Covered Staircase to reach the Church on the Hill. Moreover, we’ll admire the intricate, colourful medieval streets. For a panoramic view of the surrounding area, consider ascending the iconic Clock Tower*, where you can imagine yourself as a medieval guard keeping watch.
* The Clock Tower is not open for visiting on Mondays.
Following a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll journey towards the vineyard. This scenic drive traverses the picturesque Transylvanian plains and colourful villages. Significantly, the Tarnava region, known for its cool climate and rolling hills, primarily produces high-acid, aromatic white wines like Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala and Riesling.
Furthermore, the region’s unique terroir, influenced by the Tarnava River, creates fresh, crisp wines with distinct floral and fruity notes. Saxon settlers in the Middle Ages further developed viticulture here and consequently, the area remains a hub for high-quality Romanian white wines today. To complete this sensory experience, during the wine tasting, seven distinct wine varieties, paired with palate cleansers, will awaken your senses.
Finally, we’ll return to Cluj in the evening, filled with the rich history and authentic atmosphere of medieval Transylvania.
