this tour involves moderate walking (2-3 hours). The terrain varies, from paved surfaces to uneven ground, cobblestones and city hills. Be prepared to descend & climb stairs. There will be up to 500 steps (most of them without a handrail) throughout the day. Periods of standing during city walks or sightseeing stops are also common.

Day 1: The Hunyadi legacy: Alba Iulia & Hunedoara

Embark on a captivating journey through the heart of Transylvania, exploring its rich history and cultural tapestry. This Transylvania fortified sites tour delves into the region’s enduring medieval heritage.

Depart from Cluj at 8:30 a.m.. We then journey with a scenic drive along the Western Carpathians, eventually arriving in Alba Iulia.  Explore the impressive Alba Carolina fortress, a masterpiece of Vauban-style military architecture. Furthermore, delve into the city’s rich past, from Roman ruins to the tombs of Hungarian royals. Finally, learn about the important role Alba Iulia played in Romania’s history.

Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

Next, transfer to Hunedoara to discover the Corvin Castle (also known as Hunyadi Castle), built by the glorious Hunyadi family which gave the Kingdom of Hungary one of its greatest Kings: Matthias Corvin (Matthias the Just). Consequently, immerse yourself in the legends and stories surrounding this iconic landmark and its legendary ruler, John Hunyadi, who became known from the 15th century as Champion of Christ.

In late afternoon arrive in Sibiu, a charming city with a vibrant cultural scene. Enjoy free time to explore the charming streets, admire the colorful houses and savor a delicious dinner at one of the many local restaurants.

Day 2: Fortified wonders of Transylvania: Sibiu, Biertan & Sighisoara

Begin your day with a guided tour of Sibiu, exploring the captivating medieval city. Gain insights into the rich history and vibrant culture of the Transylvanian Saxons. Also, explore their daily life, social customs and the ingenious defence systems they developed to protect their communities. Subsequently, visit the four fortifications that once protected the city, cross the iconic Liar’s Bridge and wander through the charming Small and Big Squares. Conclude your tour at the magnificent Evangelical Church.

Next, continue your journey through Transylvania with a visit to the Biertan fortified church, a 15th century UNESCO World Heritage site. This impressive church served as the evangelical bishopric see for over 300 years, thus leaving a lasting mark on the region.

The final stop of the day will be Sighisoara, another UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore the medieval citadel, one of the few still inhabited in Europe.
