Turda salt mine
€ 39
per personIt is not unheard of taking a boat ride on a lake. Underground lakes inside caves are not uncommon either. But what if you could take a boat ride yourself inside a salt mine? Get ready for an unforgettable Turda Salt Mine Tour! Visit Turda’s intriguingly beautiful salt mine and experience this unique adventure.
As Transylvania became part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the history of salt mining in Turda started to be sketched out. Even though first documents mentioning salt mining here date from the 13th century, the mine accessible for visits nowadays was shaped starting with the 17th century, when Transylvania joined the Habsburg Monarchy.
Used as an antiaircraft shelter during WWII, as a cheese maturation facility during the communist period and finally upgraded to a unique underground theme park at the beginning of the 21st century, the salt mine in Turda still preserves millions of chisel and hammer marks, left as ‘salt signatures’ by the miners who once worked here.
This guided tour to Salina Turda will offer you an unforgettable experience in the heart of Transylvania.
